The first mile of the line, northwards from the Heritage Centre toward Cortonwood, has been re-laid after it was closed in 1983 with the closure of Elsecar Main Colliery and is now operated by the Elsecar Steam Railway. If funds ever permit, it would make a more interesting ride if the line could eventually extend all the way to the junction with the former main line near Wath. Spiralling financial problems, compounded by the Covid-19 pandemic, were blamed for its sudden closure. The railway was operated using a variety of different preserved rolling stock. The railway is an important part of Barnsleys history and visitor offer.
